Carpeting has many benefits that make it a good choice for flooring in your home. Carpet adds warmth and it can muffle sound. Plus, since carpeting comes in many colors and designs, it can add to the beauty of your home décor. Installing carpeting as a DIY project is an ambitious undertaking and probably not something you should do yourself unless you have an experienced helper. Instead, have your carpeting installed by the store or by an installer they recommend so your floors are beautiful with no wrinkles or bumps. Here's what to expect when you have carpet installed.
Allow A Few Days
Unless you're just having a single room, such as your bedroom, carpeted, be patient and allow the installation crew plenty of time to do a quality job with your new carpeting. You should be given an estimate on how long the job will take and the length of time depends on the square footage of the carpet you're having installed as well as other factors such as dealing with a room that has a unique shape.
Remove Small Items From The Room
The room or rooms receiving the new carpeting have to be cleared so the crew can work. Pack things like lamps and other décor in sturdy bins and place them where they won't be disturbed. If you're physically able to move the furniture to another room, you may want to do that too, however, moving furniture might be a service offered by the carpet installation crew. Find out what all you should do to prepare for installation day so you don't hold up the workers.
Prep The Room
A service the installation crew usually offers is removing the old flooring as well as disposing of it. Old carpet has to be torn up and hauled away, but it might be possible to lay new carpeting over tile or other types of floors. In either case, the floor or subfloor has to be cleaned as the first step in getting ready for new carpet. Other steps that may be needed include taking down a door and taking off trim and molding along the baseboards.
Install The Carpeting
Installing new carpeting is tricky work since the carpet has to be stretched out and held with adhesive and pins. This requires special tools and the ability to use them to get beautiful results with the new carpet. Your crew may be able to install a single room in just a few hours. To complete the job, the doors and molding have to be put back in place. You can probably walk on the carpeting as soon as the crew is finished, but you may be instructed to leave the furniture off until the next day to give time for the adhesive to set.
