Peel-And-Stick Tiles As Flooring: Pros And Cons

When it comes to flooring, you have all kinds of options. If you want to DIY your flooring, there are plenty of options for that as well. One such option, peel-and-stick tiles, is one of the easiest to install when you are not a professional. Here are some pros and cons to this type of flooring.

Pros

No Need to Rip up the Old Flooring

Sometimes when you are attempting to revamp an old floor, you have to rip up the old floor to put in the new one. With peel-and-stick flooring tiles, you can leave the old floor right where it is, unless there are gaping holes or the old floor is carpeting. In those instances, you will need to patch the hole(s) or rip out the carpeting because peel-and-stick tiles have to stick to a hard surface to work.

Lots of Patterns and Styles

These tiles come in vinyl, linoleum, and porcelain. There are lots of different patterns and styles, too. You can use them in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the laundry room, or anywhere else you would prefer to have an easy-to-wash floor that generally resists getting wet. The vinyl and linoleum tiles cut easily to fit around corners.

Cons

Once You Stick It, the Floor Is Not Coming Up

As you might imagine, these tiles are made to be super-sticky. If you are not precise in laying down each tile, it will not stick in line with the others. This leads to the removal of tiles that overlap, and it leads to unsightly gaps between some tiles. Additionally, if you need to trim a tile to make it fit, you have to trim it before you peel off the paper backing and stick it to the floor, or it will damage whatever it is you do not want the tile to be sticking to.

If You Do Not Like It, It Will Be Difficult to Change

Therein lies the rub. If you do not like how these tiles look once they are installed, you are going to need a pro's help scraping and pulling the tiles up off the substrate floor. The floor that is underneath and supporting these tiles will also be ruined, and it will need to be replaced before you can put in a different type of flooring material. Sometimes a solvent is needed to help lift these stick-on tiles from the floor, which can lead to toxic fumes and vapors in the air.

About Me

To The Floor: Flooring Selection And Installation

I bought a house that was a fixer-upper. Among the things that it needed was new flooring in the kitchen and the dining room. The wood flooring that was there had been heavily neglected. I had no idea where to start to install new floors. I worked with a flooring contractor who was really patient with me and taught me a lot. The more I learned, the easier it was to make decisions about the flooring I needed and how it should be installed. I created this site to teach others about how to choose and install the right flooring for their homes.
